The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - L'Acropoli
L’acropoli di Lipari si innalza dalla piana costiera di Diana e si protende, con pareti scoscese, nel mare formando due insenature: Marina Lunga, a Nord, e Marina Corta a Sud. Il suo aspetto attuale e’ dato dalle possenti fortificazioni erette dagli Spagnoli nel XVI secolo inglobando resti di fortificazioni medioevali e di eta’ greca risalenti, con tutta probabilita’, al IV secolo a.C., al periodo cioe’ della maggior floridezza della Lipari greca. L’acropoli di Lipari si e’ rivelata, agli scavi effettuati dal 1950 in poi, come un immenso archivio nel quale sono conservati, in regolare sovrapposizione stratigrafica, le testimonianze di tutte le civilta’ che si sono succedute nelle isole. La zona archeologica (nella quale dopo saggi esplorativi praticati in tutta la superficie del Castello e poi ricoperti, si sono concentrati gli scavi) si estende a Ovest della strada principale che porta alla cattedrale ed e’ divisa in due parti dalla strada che da’ accesso alle chiese dell’Immacolata ...
