POZZALLO
Pozzallo represents the only maritime commune of the Ragusa province and extends himself for 2 km on the Mediterranean sea offering to his inhabitants and his tourists two big beaches with thin and gilt sand. The beach called "Raganzino" and placed in the homonymous quarter, is ideal for the ones who love the quiet equipped with bathing establishments, kiosks, showers and various services with the characteristic "Di Martino’s castle" which dominates the beach. The beach called "Pietrenere" is provided with a wide car park, a ciclabile track, bathing establishments, pubs, discopubs, ice-cream shop, refreshments, bars, kiosks and a games park for the entertainment of the big and the small.
Pozzallo received his first Blue Flag in 2002, and then every year untill 2006, it is a reward which only the more cleaned and equipped beaches of Italy can boast.
Especially well organized are the turist trips to the Malta island with a catamaran daily service of half and hour from and to the “Island of the knigths”. In the summer time are also organized tournaments of beach volley, beach soccer, kick saponato, lessons of American Latin dance and spin bike. Of particular historical interest, the Cabrera Tower, become at present National Monument besides coat of arms and symbol of the town.
It is possible also to admire Piazza Rimembranza, the Musso Palace, the Pandolfi Palace, the Germans Villa. On the principal street of the town is placed the Town Hall which his beautiful public gardens in front of the Mother Church consacrated to the Our Lady of the Rosary. Illustrious personality of the history of Pozzallo has been Giorgio La Pira (1904-1977) "holy mayor" of Florence.
The Pozzallo name means "well at the sea" since in the past there were wells of sweet water where the passage ships were drawing.
He overlooks a wide inlet which is extended from Punta Raganzino to Marza Quarter, through beaches, dunes and small promontories.
The presence of human settlements goes back at far ages and is testified from the finding of cimiterial areas and ruins (found by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi), coins of Roman age and further founds of Byzantine age. Instead his historical importance is relatively recent since it begins around the XIV century, age in which the Chiaramonte of the county of Modica built a loader to transport goods by sea.
Then for the continuos pirate attacks of the escorts of grain and agricultural products, in 1429 it is built a tower, to defence the loader itself, and then under the domain of the earl Giovanni Bernardo Cabrera new stores were built. Gradually the original agglomerate of houses aroun the tower began to assume a farmhouse appearance: it was built the church consecreted to S. Maria of Portosalvo (1746) and only in 1829 Pozzallo became an autonomous commune. Of particular historical interest it is the Cabrera Tower which nowdays has become National Monument, coat of arms and symbol of the town.
