Messina lies on the north-east coast of Sicily on the Strait of the same name separating the island from the mainland.
Founded as Zancle in the second half of the 8th century BC. by Chalcidian Greeks, its name was changed to Messene in about 490 BC. with the arrival of settlers from Messenia. Later conquered by Syracusans, Mamertines and Carthaginians, it came under the influence of Rome in 264 BC. After the fall of the Empire, Messina was dominated by the Goths before passing to Byzantium in 553 and Arab rule in 843. It became a Norman possession in 1061. From this date, its history was that of the Kingdom of Sicily. Its monuments include: the Duomo, rebuilt to its original 2nd century forms, of which something remains (portals, mosaics, tombs); the Orione fountain (16th century), the church of the SS. Annunziata dei Catalani (Norman ... Read More...

Saint George's Church at Taormina
Saint George's Church St. George's Anglican Church was built in the early 1920s on the initiative of a small group of English people who used to spend most of the year in Taormina. The church was designed by Sir Harry Triggs, an English architect and the son-in-law of Sir Edward Hill, who owned the land and was a real promoter of Taormina's wonders.
There are two aisles inside the church, which is divided by three round arches in Siracusa stone with two central columns as their base. The most beautiful part of the church is its large polychrome window behind the main altar picturing Jesus on the cross with St. Catherine on the left and St. George in his mediaeval amour on the right.
From the 17th century onwards, great interest in the art and history of the Greek and Roman civilisation developed in Northern Europe which led to numerous foreigners visiting Sicily; among these were many English families who actually settled on the Island, choosing it as their adopted country.
