Messina lies on the north-east coast of Sicily on the Strait of the same name separating the island from the mainland.

 

Founded as Zancle in the second half of the 8th century BC. by Chalcidian Greeks, its name was changed to Messene in about 490 BC. with the arrival of settlers from Messenia. Later conquered by Syracusans, Mamertines and Carthaginians, it came under the influence of Rome in 264 BC. After the fall of the Empire, Messina was dominated by the Goths before passing to Byzantium in 553 and Arab rule in 843. It became a Norman possession in 1061. From this date, its history was that of the Kingdom of Sicily. Messina was on several occasions struck by an earthquake and the last, in 1908, almost destroyed it completely, claiming over 60,000 victims.

Messina in Sicilia - The Aquarium

 

The aquarium of Messina was built in the late 50's by the Istituto Talassografico of the CNR in the interior of the Mazzini Villa. In 1986 it was donated to the City Hall. In houses many different varietes of fish and Invertibrates among the guest are the "diafona ciona" part of the Tunicatus family, the condrosie that are sponges of various color. On the Antozoi family are the brown sea anemones and the red sea tomato, also there are some species of Horny Coral that form species tree-like columns. The marine Anellidi are represented by the spirograph, and by the sabella pavonina, among the Echinodermata, are the starfish and the sea urchins. In addition to the species above, the aquarium is also home to the cat fish, that live entirely under the sand, electric eels, octopus, the pacific shark, that feeds on small prey, dursky perch, sea-bass, perch, au from tropical seas.
