Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art. The population density is slightly higher than the national average. The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - Animali e piante
La vegetazione attuale e’ completamente diversa da quella fittissima e rigogliosa che aveva colonizzato e ricoperto le fertili lave emesse dai vulcani. La necessita’ dell’uomo di coltivare il suolo, di utilizzare il legname e i frequenti incendi, hanno determinato l’odierno paesaggio dell’isola. Fino agli anni ‘50 buona parte del suolo e’ stata intensamente coltivata mentre oggi solo nelle contrade di Pianoconte e di Quattropani continua una certa produzione agricola che, da qualche anno, e’ stata sensibilmente incrementata per la crescente richiesta turistica di prodotti tipici isolani.
Le zone settentrionali appaiono, rispetto al resto dell’isola, piu’ selvagge, ricoperte di macchia mediterranea a lentisco, ginestre, erica, euforbie, cisto.
