Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art. Together with the minor Aeolian islands (the Lipari), Ustica, Egadi, Pantelleria and the distant Pelagie, Sicily is the most extensive region in Italy, though it has only the fourth highest population. The population density is slightly higher than the national average. The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Iles Eoliennes - Lipari
LIPARI, anciennement appelée Meligunis, est l’île la plus grande et la plus peuplée de l’archipel, ainsi que sa capitale depuis toujours. En effet, à l’exception de Salina, qui est indépendante, toutes les autres îles sont partie de la Commune de Lipari. Pour débarquer à Lipari on peut choisir entre deux quais situés aux côtes de sa forteresse. Les hydrofoils accostent à Marina Corta, alors que les ferry-boats abordent au quai de Sottomonastero. L’île est traversée par une longue route côtière asphaltée et par un dédale de sentiers et de chemins charretiers. Lipari, qui en est le centre principal, s’etend le long des deux criques pittoresques de Marina Corta et de Marina Lunga, et une partie de ses habitations se recuille aussi autour de son propre château.
