The Province of Agrigento. The town lies 230 m. above sea level on a hill running parallel to the Ionian coast, some 3 km. away, in a position dominating the Valle dei Templi. The old nucleus still has a stepped medieval structure with steep narrow winding streets.
Founded with the name of Akragas by the inhabitants of Gela in the 6th century BC., Agrigento quickly became an important centre in Magna Grecia, as can be seen from the massive remains still visible near the town. Destroyed by Carthage in 406 BC., it rose again and about two centuries later was under Roman rule. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was dominated by the Goths and then the Byzantines (6th century), under whose rule it sharply declined until, in 829, it was taken by the Arabs, who destroyed the town only to rebuild it on a higher site.

Cenni storici.. - Agrigento in Sicilia
Da S. Angelo ad Agrigento il salto è di soli 30 Km! Ma è un salto che può farci perdere la testa: si rischia di dimenticare il presente e di naufragare nella bellezza. La Valle dei templi è un giardino magico, sospeso tra il cielo e il mare, dove la squisitezza delle forme doriche - 11 templi, fra cui uno ancora integro - spicca come il ricamo di un arazzo stupefacente. La città greca, di nome Akragas, fondata dai Geloi, nel 580 a.C, fu una delle più splendide del mondo greco.
Questo splendore è testimoniato anche dai reperti esposti nel prestigioso Museo archeologico regionale S. Nicola. Dell'Agrigento medievale rimane oggi un centro storico che, benchè adulterato dall'edilizia del dopoguerra, serba ancora dei monumenti di tutto rispetto come la Cattedrale, di fondazione normanna e dedicata a San Gerlando, e il Monastero chiaramontano di S. spirito, la cui chiesetta è arricchita all'interno da squisiti stucchi del Serpotta.
