The Province of Agrigento. The town lies 230 m. above sea level on a hill running parallel to the Ionian coast, some 3 km. away, in a position dominating the Valle dei Templi. The old nucleus still has a stepped medieval structure with steep narrow winding streets.

 

Founded with the name of Akragas by the inhabitants of Gela in the 6th century BC., Agrigento quickly became an important centre in Magna Grecia, as can be seen from the massive remains still visible near the town. Destroyed by Carthage in 406 BC., it rose again and about two centuries later was under Roman rule. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was dominated by the Goths and then the Byzantines (6th century), under whose rule it sharply declined until, in 829, it was taken by the Arabs, who destroyed the town only to rebuild it on a higher site.

Primi scavi ad opera dei Borboni; 1787 anastilosi tempio Giunone, restauro frontone orientale Concordia 1788; 1802/1805 sgombero strutture del tempio di Giove Olimpico e individuazione della pianta del monumento; 1835-36 restauri Tempio Demetra, Rupe Atenea,tempio di Ercole e tempio dei Dioscuri (rialzate colonne); 1867 messa in luce casa a peristilio nel quartiere cd. Ellenistico – romano; 1871-1873 1877-78 1884-85: restauri tempio della Concordia; 1897 rinvenuto efebo in pozzo in zona San Biagio;

 

Le necropoli vengono depredate. 1899-1903 scavi settore necropoli romana imperiale, a sud della collina dei templi. 1920 scavi San leone, localizzazione emporium, avanzi magazzini bizantini. 1922 scavi tempio di Giove, messo in luce sacello ellenistico presso lo spigolo sud est del tempio. 1922-24/1931 Hardcastle finanzia il rialzamento delle colonne del tempio di Ercole, scoperto baluardo a tenaglia. 1925 tempio di Demetra: messi in luce il peribolo, altare rotondo e stipe vot ...
