Iles Eoliennes - Vulcanello
(123 m), qui s’est dressé de la mer en 183 av. J.-C. suite à une éruption sous-marine, forme une petite péninsule et se compose de trois cratères situés sur une alternance de lave et de produits pyroclastiques. Dans la partie orientale, l’érosion des agents atmosphériques et marins a créé une section particulière qui met en relief la composition des cônes volcaniques: une suite de coulées de lave et de couches de matériels pyroclastiques.
L’institut de Volcanologie de l’Université de Catania et le C.N.R. contrôlent l’île de Vulcano à l’aide d’un réseau de monitorage complexe comprenant plusieurs appareils de mesure à même de détecter les températures du fond du cratère et des fumerolles et de mesurer les déformations du sol et sa sismicité. Par mesure de prudence, la protection civile a mis sur pied, en le soumettant à plusieurs tests, un plan d’évacuation de l’île par voie de mer, au cas où les appareils relèveraient la possibilité d’une éruption.
