Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art. The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - Stromboli
Dagli abissi del mare la mole dello Stromboli, dalle pendici slanciate, si staglia vigorosamente in un cielo di zaffiro. Sulle falde orientali, coperte da un manto di verde, spiccano tipiche casette bianche. Alcune, disposte lungo spiagge nere come l'ebano o presso scogli lavici, offrono strani contrasti di tinte.
Altre case sono appollaiate attorno alle chiese o si celano tra uliveti centenari. Altre infine si inerpicano sulle pendici scoscese del monte; sono per lo più diroccate e un tempo offrirono rifugio agli abitanti vittime delle scorrerie notturne dei pirati saraceni. Attorno al paese si allineano lunghe siepi di fichi d'India, che segnano spesso il limite delle proprietà.
