E' tradizione in Messina che Ruggero il normanno, un giorno dell'anno 1060, passeggiasse solitario su una spiaggia della Calabria e guardando la costa peloritana meditasse sul modo migliore per poter conquistare la Sicilia, allora occupata dagli Arabi che ne avevano fatto una terra musulmana ricca e prosperosa.
