The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - Il monastero di San Bartolomeo Apostolo
E’ uno dei quattro monasteri benedettini edificati in Sicilia da Ruggero il Normanno. Costruito in gran parte con i blocchi di pietra delle mura greche e con materiale prelevato dalle rovine che ricoprivano la rocca distrutta dai saraceni, il monastero, con il suo chiostro,sorgeva addossato alla chiesa omonima. Successivamente la chiesa sarebbe stata trasformata in cattedrale a tre navate; questo ampliamento comporto’ l’inglobamento di un lato del portico del chiostro nella navata di destra della cattedrale. E’ stato quindi costruito il palazzo del Vescovo e gli spazi che rimanevano del portico del chiostro e del cortiletto interno sono stati utilizzati in altro modo. Per lungo tempo le splendide colonne, i capitelli e le volte a crociera sono state inglobate in spessi muri che hanno spezzato i volumi originari, facendo perdere, fino agli anni ‘70, persino la memoria della loro esistenza.
