Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art.

Together with the minor Aeolian islands (the Lipari), Ustica, Egadi, Pantelleria and the distant Pelagie, Sicily is the most extensive region in Italy, though it has only the fourth highest population. The population density is slightly higher than the national average.
The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Iles Eoliennes - Strombolicchio
Un rocher gigantesque, semblable à un château médiéval ramassé, se dresse du fond de la mer à un mille de Stromboli. Cet îlot représente un neck volcanique qui, par son volume imposant et par son mouvement de masses, offre un spectacle exceptionnellement suggestif. La construction d’un escalier de plus de 200 marches et d’une grande terrasse dominée par un phare remonte à 1927. Le rocher de Strombolicchio s’élève aujourd’hui à 43 mètres de haut par rapport aux 56 mètres d’autrefois.
Il se compose d’une roche intermédiaire aux basaltes et aux andésites du type à augite. Un balcon se penche dans le vide à partir de la terrasse et permet d’admirer les saillies de la roche couvertes de câpriers et de figuiers de Barbarie; des écueils criblés par l’action abrasive de la mer; des gorges et des grottes profondes où les goélands vont nidifier; un rocher en forme de tête de cheval énorme; des remparts à pic sur la mer et des écueils minces.
