The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Messina in Sicilia - Il campanile e l'orologio del Duomo
Martino Montanini, all'inizio del XVI sec. progettò quello che, con 90 m. di altezza, era il campanile più alto della Sicilia. Colpito da un fulmine nel 1588, fu rifatto da Andrea Calamech intorno al 1575. Alla base del campanile si trovavano gli archivi della città dei quali gli spagnoli si impadronirono nel 1678, trasportandoli a Siviglia dove sono tuttora. Il vecchio campanile, danneggiato dal sisma del 1783, fu poco dopo demolito. L'attuale, progettato dal Valenti, imita le forme del più antico. Fu costruito dopo il 1908 e, nel 1933, accolse il più grande orologio animato del mondo, opera della ditta Fratelli Ungerer di Strasburgo. Orologio meccano-figurativo. Il maestoso campanile accoglie un orologio meccano-figurativo che è unico al mondo per la sua complessità, costruito dalla ditta Ungerer di Strasburgo, su commissione dell'Arcivescovo Paino (1933).
