The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

E' tradizione in Messina che Ruggero il normanno, un giorno dell'anno 1060, passeggiasse solitario su una spiaggia della Calabria e guardando la costa peloritana meditasse sul modo migliore per poter conquistare la Sicilia, allora occupata dagli Arabi che ne avevano fatto una terra musulmana ricca e prosperosa. Era successo che qualche tempo prima, alcuni coraggiosi cavalieri messinesi, sfidando la reazione degli Arabi, erano riusciti a raggiungerlo a Mileto di Calabria e gli avevano esposto il desiderio della gente siciliana di averlo come liberatore e signore.
