The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Acireale: alcuni cenni storici
Dopo un periodo di notevole importanza politica nel III sec. a. C., alla caduta dell'impero romano, Acireale entrò in un'epoca di decadenza. Nell'era bizantina, ritroviamo Jachium vicino alla fortezzadel Castello di Aci, grazie alla quale poté resistere ai musulmani fino al 902. Nel 1091, la città perse la sua autonomia e cadde sotto la giurisdizione del vescovo di Catania. Nel 1326, si spostò nell'attuale altopiano col nome di Aquilia Nova. Nel 1642 un decreto di Filippo IV di Spagna diede alla città il nome di "Reale", in quanto città demaniale.
