Aeolian Islands - In the forge of Vulcano
It takes you about an hour to walk up to the top of the crater. If you leave from the port, you follow a short stretch of the left-hand provincial road to Piano. The path up the gorse-covered slope of the volcano is steep but wide and has various twists and turns. Towards the end, it becomes a little slippery because the rainwater has created deep ruts in the reddish, crumbly tufa that is characteristic at these altitudes. Once you have reached the crater plateau, you continue walking along the right-hand edge to reach its highest point (391 m.).
From this height you have a very impressive view of the Fossa crater and of Vulcanello and Lipari on the horizon. If you face north, you will see the crater of Forgia Vecchia and nearby Pietre Cotte (both of which were formed in the eighteenth century). To the left of the point where the path ends, you will find the fumaroles area and a sign warning you not to go any closer. In the right conditions, you can actually get a close-up view of the brightly coloured interiors of the fissures from which the gas escapes. There is a path leading down to the foot of the crater: it is strongly advisable not to go down it, since if it fills with fumes you may not have the time to make your way back up to the top.
