Aeolian Islands - A Mycenaean tholos
Recent restoration work on the San Calogero thermal baths has led to the discovery close to the entrance of a hive-shaped building that was incorporated into later constructions.
This is a piece of Mycenaean civic architecture known as a ‘tholos’ that was until this time unkown in the western world. The discovery of a characteristic piece of Mycenaean architecture dating from the fifteenth century BC on the island of Lipari is an exceptional event of great historic interest. This ‘tholos’ confirms that throughout the Bronze Age (i.e., throughout the second millennium BC) there was intense cultural and commercial exchange between Greece and the Aeolian islands.
