Aeolian Islands - An island walk
Leaving from the kaolin quarries, near the fumaroles, you walk down what remains of a road that was never completed but was originally intended as an access road to the kaolin mine for vehicles coming from the coast. It takes less than 20 minutes to descend the valley trough what is a veritable wilderness. Once you reach the plain, a coastal track on the left-hand side will take you to the San Calogero thermal springs in less than 40 minutes. You actually reach this road by turning right and walking for a few metres and then bearing left around a small bend in the direction of the sea. This takes you to a small corner of paradise frequented only by those few local inhabitants who wish to enjoy the peace and solitude waiting for them here at the end of a long walk.
When you reach the end of the track, you will be at the top of Punta Palmeto, where you can see the ruins of a Saracen watchtower made of lava stone. Towards the north, the promontory forms the small bay where the crags known as Le Torricelle jut out of the water. Opposite here, you can go down to the sea and have a swim in the crystal-clear waters in complete solitude. You can then continue your walk by following the rocky coastline on the left, where you will find another wide bay. After passing the ruins of what was perhaps a brick drinking-trough, you cros over the lava bed of a stream and continue walking until you come to a small road which you can walk along in a southerly direction, enjoyng its absolute silence. The road crosses over what were once large barley and wheat fields and takes you to splendid Cala Fico, where you can admire some more isolated crags that are even closer to the coast. The path then rises slightly and takes you inland. You will come to an olive grove, where you can take a short-cut to your left along a road that is extremely old and is partly paved.
