Aeolian Islands - The saracen grottoes
These were made in olden times by the inhabitants of Salina in areas that are difficult to reach and well-hidden by the vegetation, which offered protection from Arab and Turkish marauders.
Many of the grottoes are connected by internal passages and some of them can still be visited. Leaving from Serro dell’Acqua, you take a path leading through stratified tufo and the Castagno Valley; the first grotto you come to is still inhabited. As you continue, the path becomes more difficult and eventually takes you to other such grottoes.
