Aeolian Islands - Spotting Falcons
Bath sea and land environments offer great natural variety. A large colory of Eleonora’s falcons come from the coasts of Madagascar to nest at Salina in the springtime, building their nests in the rugged rock faces between the coast and Monte Pizzo di Corvo. Specialised guides are available to accompany birdwatchers to the area twice a week. The falcons can also be seen from the sea if you leave from Rinella harbour and head for Filo di Brando. You can also sail to the small village of Pollara, which can hardly be seen because it is nestled in a vast natural amphitheatre that was formed when half of the ancient crater crumbled into the sea.
This is where the very best capers are grown. The beach at Pollara is also the nicest on the island and the place where some of the scenes of “ Il Postino” were filmed. In the tufa on the northern side, you can see some grottoes that were made as shelters for boats. At the side of this, an impressive arch has been made in the basalt rock of Punta del Perciato by the motion of the waves.
