Aeolian Islands - A Peaceful holiday
More than on any other island in the archipelago, the small coastal villages have retained their secret, intriguing atmosphere. The main villages are Filicudi Porto, where the boats and hydrofoils come in, Pecorini a Mare and, higher up, Valdichiesa. A recently constructed road connects the three centres, although use is still made of the mule tracks and pathways that were once the only means of communication. However, the villages themselves have not changed at all: the typical Aeolian houses have not been modified and lie along the south-eastern coast on the island’s gentler slopes, following the shape of the land and property boundaries. The prehistoric village of Filo Braccio can be reached on foot in about half an hour if you leave from Filicudi Porto.
This island is an ideal place for a peaceful holiday, where you will find the rhythms of bygone days, taste genuine food and have the change to make excursions into the heart of nature, such as the one taking you to the summit of Fossa delle Felci. It takes you about an hour and a half to walk up the path beginning in Valdichiesa and leading up the south-eastern slope of the mountain. There are no signs along the way, so it is better to be accompanied by a guide. Just before you reach Valdichiesa, there is a path you can take to the tiny village of Zucca Grande, which is perched on the side of the volcano. The walk lasts about forty minutes.
