Isole Eolie - Alicudi
Alicudi was known in ancient times as Ericusa because of the thick erica busches that cover most of the island, which is composed of a complex-stratum volcano. The south-western side is covered with tiny volcanoes with exinct cupolas. On Alicudi there are neither endogenic phenomena nor traces of recent activity. Alicudi is cone shaped and its peak is known as Filo dell’Arpa or Timpone della Montagnola (662 m.). The western side of the island is steep and uninhabited, while the eastern side is composed of terraces dotted with houses and, in a picturesque position, the church of San Bartolomeo.
Characteristic locations in rather inaccessible areas are Serro della Farcona and Timpone delle Femmine, which is where the local women took refuge during Saracen incursions. As you sail around the island, you can admire the terraced slopes covered with bushes and prickly pear plants, high slopes with layers of black rock and reddish conglomerate, gorges, valleys and a succession of high precipices. A settlement dating from early Capo Graziano culture (twenty-ninth to twenty-seventh century BC) probably stretched from the port area in the district of Pantalucci as far as the high spur in the district of Fucile. Fragments of Roman pottery have been found on the eastern coast of the island.
