Isole Eolie - Strombolicchio
A mile off the coast of Stromboli, there lies an enormous rock that resembles a stout mediaeval castle.
This small island is volcanic neck and your first glimpse of this massive rock will be a truly unforgettable experience.
In 1927, a flight of over two hundres steps was built here, together with a vast terrace dominated by a lighthouse.
Originally 56 metres in height, the rock now measures 43 metres. It is composed of an intermediate rock lying between layers of basalt and augite andesites. There is a balcony jutting out from the terrace, where you can stand and admire the small rock spurs where prickly pears and caper trees grow; rocks that have been worn thin by the motion of the sea; deep ruts and grottoes which are the habitat of seagulls; a rock in the shape of a gigantic horse’s head; massive overhanging boulders and taper-thin rocks.
As you stand on the gallery at the top of the lighthouse, you can see the Calabrian Apennines to the east, while, looking southwards, you have a view of mounts Peloritani and Nebrodi next to the massive figure of Stromboli, and beyond this you can just make out the summit of Mount Etna.
