The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Caponatina - Acireale in Catania
Ingredienti per 4 persone
4 melanzane
4 peperoni
4 patate
1 sedano
1 cipolla
100 gr. di olive verdi
2 cucchiai di polpa di pomodoro
1 bicchiere di aceto
mezzo bicchiere di zucchero
olio d’oliva, sale, pepe
Pulire le melanzane senza eliminare la buccia, tagliarle a tocchi e metterle in acqua con sale per almeno mezz’ora affinché perdano l’amaro. Nettare il sedano, tagliare la costa a pezzetti, tagliare a fettine la cipolla e farla dorare col sedano nell’olio, unitevi la polpa di pomodoro e fate cuocere a fuoco moderato. Lavare i peperoni, eliminare il torsolo e i semi e tagliarli a tocchi, quindi soffriggerli a parte in olio bollente. Pelare, lavare e tagliare a tocchi le patate e soffriggerle a parte in olio bollente. Lavare con cura i tocchi di melanzane, asciugarli e soffriggere anch’essi in olio bollente.
