The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Messina in Sicilia - il Santuario di Sant'Antonio
Messina , città di antichissime origini è fiera di aver dato i natali ad un suo illustre figlio il Beato Annibale Maria di Francia, alla sua indiscussa santità e al suo apostolico zelo, si deve la costruzione del Santuario di Sant'Antonio.Il Santuario è tra le chiese più importanti e conosciute di Messina, ed è meta annuale per migliaia di pellegrini provenienti da ogni parte.
Il Santuario di Sant'Antonio sorge sul luogo dell'antico quartiere "Avignone" dove il Beato Annibale dal marzo del 1878 iniziò il suo apostolato a favore dei più poveri e bisognosi. Nel 1881, nelle casette di Avignone, viene inaugurata la prima cappella dedicata al Cuore di Gesù.Dopo il terremoto del 1908 venne impiantata una chiesa baracca, dono del Papa Pio X, nella quale il Beato Annibale proclamò Sant'Antonio "Singolarissimo e instancabile Benefattore nostro e di tutti quelli che alle nostre preghiere si raccomandano".
