Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art.

Together with the minor Aeolian islands (the Lipari), Ustica, Egadi, Pantelleria and the distant Pelagie, Sicily is the most extensive region in Italy, though it has only the fourth highest population. The population density is slightly higher than the national average.
The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Iles Eoliennes - Une promenade a pied
En partant des carrières de kaolin, près des fumerolles, il faut descendre d’altitude en suivant ce qui reste d’une route, jamais achevée, qui aurait dû permettre aux moyens de transport venant de la mer d’atteindre la mine de kaolin. En moins de 20 minutes on descend le long du vallon, en traversant un paysage extrêmement sauvage et solitaire. Une fois atteint le plateau, on peut prendre une ruelle de terre côtière à gauche qui conduit aux thermes de San Calogero en quelque 40 minutes. En prenant la même route à droite et en suivant, après quelques dizaines de mètres, une faible trace qui tourne à gauche, on marche en direction de la mer pour atteindre un coin de paradis, destination des rares habitants de Lipari qui aiment le calm et la solitude achevés après de longues promenades. On parvient, enfin, au sommet de la pointe Palmeto, où l’on peut observer les vestiges d’une guette sarrasine en pierre de lave.
