Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art.

Together with the minor Aeolian islands (the Lipari), Ustica, Egadi, Pantelleria and the distant Pelagie, Sicily is the most extensive region in Italy, though it has only the fourth highest population. The population density is slightly higher than the national average.
The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - Salina
L'isola e' suddivisa in tre Comuni: Santa Marina, Leni e Malfa. Lo scalo degli aliscafi e delle navi avviene al porto di Santa Marina e, sull'altro versante dell'isola, a Rinella. Una strada asfaltata collega Lingua, Santa Marina, Malfa e Pollara e una deviazione supera la sella tra i due vulcani raggiungendo Leni e Rinella. A Salina vi è un ottimo servizio di minibus che collega rapidamente tutti i centri, anche a sera inoltrata. Salina è l'antica Didyme (gemella), nome derivato dalla sua forma: due rilievi separati da una sella. Il nome attuale deriva da uno stagno costiero che, un tempo, era utilizzato come salina. E' ubicato lungo la punta di Lingua; ha una profondita' di pochi metri e una estensione di circa due ettari. I cordoni litorali che lo cingono sono formati dalle forti correnti marine che attraversano il canale interposto tra Salina e Lipari.
