The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Quest’isola e’ un angolo intimo e nascosto, lontano dal traffico e dalla mondanita’ da sempre, anche per la sua posizione decentrata che l’ha sempre messa a margine, degli eventi storici e socio-culturali delle Eolie. Anche qui, comunque, sono stati ritrovati resti archeologici riferibili all’eta’ del Bronzo e all’epoca classica. E’ nel medioevo che l’isola rimase completamente disabitata, utilizzata soltanto come pascolo di armenti bradi, per essere poi ripopolata durante la dominazione spagnola. Anche il turismo e' diverso rispetto a quello che anima il resto dell'arcipelago; qui' non esistono mezzi di locomozione di alcun genere, perche' nel corso della storia e' stato impossibile costruire strade o sentieri carrozzabili, data la morfologia dell'isola, cosi' aguzza e scabra.
